What should you expect at an in home newborn photography session?

Welcome to the world of newborn photography! Bringing a photographer into your home during those first few weeks might feel a bit daunting, but an in-home session is designed to be the most relaxed way to capture this fleeting time.

Here is exactly what you can expect when I arrive at your doorstep.

Following Your Prep Guide

A few days before our session, you received a Newborn Prep Guide via email. Following these steps is the secret to a smooth morning. By having the house nice and warm, ensuring the baby has a full tummy just before I arrive, and having your chosen outfits laid out, we can jump right into the magic without any stress.

Starting with Family Connections

I always like to start our session with family and sibling portraits. There are a few reasons why we kick off this way:

  • Fresh Energy: Everyone is dressed and ready to go right at the start.

  • Toddler Patience: If there are older siblings, their "camera window" is usually short. Capturing them first allows them to go off and play (or have a snack) while we focus on the baby later.

  • Settling In: Focusing on the connection between you and your baby helps everyone relax into the session.

Baby-Led Posing and Comfort

Once the family photos are tucked away, we move on to individual portraits of your newborn. My approach is entirely baby-led.

  • Safety First: Using my background as a neonatal and paediatric nurse, I ensure your baby is always in a safe, natural position.

  • Soothing Breaks: If the baby needs a nappy change, a top-up feed, or just a long cuddle, we stop. There is never any rush.

  • My sessions: I take similar images to what you would expect from a studio, it will just be in the comfort of your own home.

Capturing the Details

Towards the end of the session, I focus on the "tiny-ness." I’ll capture those flaky newborn ankles, the translucent eyelashes, and the way their tiny fingers curl. These are the details that change the fastest, and they are often the photos parents treasure most years down the line.

Wrapping Up

A typical in-home session lasts between two to four hours. This allows plenty of time for feeding and settling. By the time I pack up my gear, your baby will likely be fast asleep, and you’ll be left to enjoy the rest of your day in the comfort of your own home.
